Chapter Five

Simon

My heart races as I struggle against the bindings that pin my ankles and hands together. The car goes over another big bump, and I’m thrown against the bottom of the trunk. For a second it’s hard to catch my breath, and then I’m back to trying to struggle to get out of my bindings.

Because when I get to my destination, I already know I’m dead.

But no matter how much I try to escape, I can’t. The realization hits me like a punch to the gut. I lie on the bottom of the trunk panting, feeling each bruise and cut on my body. Remembering how the forest had tore at me as I’d run from my sister.

My sister who came to kill me, then didn’t.

The car stops. I tense, waiting, but I don’t have to wait long. The lid of the trunk opens, a hand reaches inside, and I’m yanked out.

I don’t get a chance to see much as I’m dragged into the mansion. All I see is dark brick and thick forests, then nothing.

Inside the windows are all closed and candles light the tall staircase I’m hauled up. The man that drags me takes me to a door at the end of the hall, then throws it up. I’m tossed into the middle of the floor, where I roll slightly to see the man behind the desk.

Guards separate themselves from the walls of his study and come to stand beside me. One of them grips me by the hair and pulls me onto my knees as I bite down on a cry of pain.

“Collin,” the man greets. “Do you remember me?”

A shiver wracks my body. I’d never actually met this man, but we’d spoken over the phone many times, and now that I heard his familiar, gravelly voice, I recognized him.

“Isha,” I say, his name barely louder than a whisper.

He nods. “The man who promised to make you the leader of the four houses, as long as I was placed as your second-in-command. A man who funded far too much of your spending. A man who allowed you to take his daughters as your women, as long as you gave me powerful heirs.”

Another tremble moves through my body. I may have accidentally killed one of his daughters. While the other had died by my sister’s hands last night.

“Speak!” he shouts.

I don’t know what to say, so I simply say, “that’s right.”

The necromancer’s eyes blaze with fury. “But it was all a lie, wasn’t it Collin? You could never fulfill your side of our bargain, because you are nothing but a human.”

I don’t want to answer, but I don’t want to enrage him further. “That’s also true.”

“Deceiving me was a mistake,” he says.

Then, he nods to his guards.

One draws a sword.

“Wait!” I shout.

The guard moves the sword to my throat.

“I’m not the Chosen,” I rush out. “But I can control her!”

The necromancer raises a finger to his guard. “She killed your people and left you wounded. I don’t believe you still have her ear.
